Centro Maya Xela is not just another online language school, but a real one located in Xela, Guatemala. We have nineteen years of experience in teaching Spanish to foreigners in our school. We understand that every student is different and has specific goals and reasons for studying Spanish. We tailor our classes to meet those needs. During your Free Spanish Lesson your instructor will evaluate your level of Spanish and determine your goals. Your teacher will then discuss with you a recommended Spanish curriculum. We are happy to make any changes to this curriculum at anytime. We also offer Mayan language classes online.

This is an outline of a typical online Spanish lesson

1. You will receive an email from your instructor with the material needed to prepare for your lesson in advance of your class.
2. At the scheduled time, both you and your instructor will log onto to Skype to make contact and begin your 50 minute one on one lesson.
3. Your lesson will be interactive. Your instructor will use a variety of written and oral exercises using the chat window to display study materials that are determined by your course of study.
4. Before the class has ended, your instructor will summarize the day’s lesson and provide you with homework that will be emailed to you to prepare for your next class.

Individualized Programs

You may want to make changes to your individualized program as you proceed through your course , and your teacher will be happy to make any changes. Your feed back is very important to us, and helping you achieve your linguistic goals is our number one priority.

At Centro Maya Xela we understand the challenges of learning a foreign language. We think learning should be fun, fast and and interactive. We want to hear from you about your country and culture, and we will share the beauty of ours with you.

Our online Skype classes are taught from our physical school in Guatemala in a controlled and professional environment. We are a non-profit school. When you study with us you are helping to support our scholarship program for impoverished indigenous women of Guatemala in the local university.

Our Teachers

Pedro Lucas is the Director and one of the founders of Centro Maya Xela. He has over 25 years of experience teaching Spanish to foreigners and he has taught in our school since it opened in 1993. Pedro has a bachelor’s degree in teaching and philosophy from the university in Xela. Our teaching staff are from various highland pueblos and we are all native Spanish speakers.

Many of our instructors also speak a variety of indigenous languages native to our communities, and classes in indigenous languages are also offered online. Every teacher is university educated with years of experience in teaching to foreign students and cultural exchange is an important part of the program. This not only offers the students excellent language instruction, but also an ample knowledge of the Guatemalan and Latin American reality.

We have had over 2500 foreign students from over 30 different countries study with us over the past nineteen years. We encourage you to come in study with us in Xela, but we also understand that most can’t travel to Guatemala. With our new Skype learning program we will continue teaching our one on one Spanish classes with the same level of enthusiasm and expertise that we have here in our physical school.
